Information for organizers of church events -- how to find a sign language interpreter in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington

1. for a list of recommended interpreters with their contact information, contact the Rev. Barbara Allen, Vicar of St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church of the Deaf

2. When you have need of a sign language interpreter, have the event, date, time, place and approximate length of the event ready.

3. Be sure to begin your search at least two weeks ahead of the time.

4. Send an e-mail to your list of interpreters giving them the information in #2. Tell them your preferred mode of response, e.g. phone or e-mail. If you prefer phone be sure to give them the phone numbers where they can reach you.

5. The interpreters will respond with their availability. You might go on the "first come" basis.

Fees and Other Helpful Information

The interpreters on the list usually charge from $35-40/hr with a minimum charge of two hours. That is, they are paid for two hours even if they do not work for two full hours. Anything over two hours is pro-rated according to the above fee schedule.

Here is information from a local Interpreting referral agency if you cannot find anyone on the list available. Agency fees begin at about $50/hr with a two hour minimum. This can be more depending on the interpreting setting.
