The 107th Convention of the Diocese of Washington |
As the Eighth Bishop of Washington was to be elected at this convention, preparations started several weeks earlier with "walk throughs" where the congregations had the opportunity to personally interview each of the 6 candidates. Your delegate and 4 other members of St. B. Mission Committee had this opportunity on January 11th at Trinity Church in Takoma Park. We were most interested in their support of our Mission and its service to Gallaudet. All candidates assured us of their support if they were elected. On the first ballot at the convention no candidate had a simple majority, though the candidate we agreed to support made a very good showing. On the second ballot Friday morning The Very Rev. John Bryson Chane easily won a simple majority. When the announcement was made, quoting an article from "St. John's at the Crossroads" 'The applause was deafening, and it didn't come from only those who had voted for Dean Chane, but from everyone.' The remainder of the convention was spent on hearings on the budget, resolutions and electing of clergy and lay representatives to the Diocesan Council, Standing Committees, delegates and alternates to General Convention 2003. This business went along very smoothly resulting in the business being completed sooner than expected. After business, Bishop Dixon delivered a very emotional farewell address in which she pledged her loyalty to Bishop-elect Chane. After opening services Saturday morning Bishop-elect Chane and his wife, Karen, who had flown out from San Diego, joined us. He gave a short speech outlining some of his hopes and concerns for the Diocese, and his commitment to including everyone. This was followed by a lengthy discussion of the budget after which a deficit budget was passed. |

Message from Tracy Dieter |
Dear brothers and sisters,
As I am now beginning to write notes to people who have been so wonderful to my family as we mourn the death of my mother, I want to write to this community first. I do not know how to thank you for your love and prayers and your gift to my mother's memorial. I certainly do not know how to thank you for the gift of yourselves, being there at the requiem. It is like thanking you for being yourselves. Your presence and support was a strong reminder of how much God loves us all. I am letting that support carry me as I do the things I have to get done for my mother's estate and taking care of myself and my family. Thank you for being God's messengers (angels) to me in this time of letting go. God bless, Tracy |

A Message from Mary Kay Koerner |
I would like to take this opportunity to offer all of you for all of the emotional and financial support you have given to my student, Kiombo Nsumbu. When I brought him to the United States September, 2000 he entered a whole new world. He hasn't had the luxury of a lot of time to make an enormous transition, and each of you in your own way has eased the pain of that transition.
Kiombo's journey has been difficult and frightening for him. Over the past weeks I have had a chance to watch him deal with many different kinds of situations.all of which he never had to contend with in Congo. As much as I would love to say he is succeeding because of all the hard work I put in with him in Congo, I know that the reality is that he is growing in confidence and capacity in large part because of you. I must return to Congo and once again, I leave Kiombo with his new American family. I have been his teacher and like a mama to him over the past five years. It is difficult to let him go! But if he is to continue to learn and grow at Gallaudet, I must be sure that the road is paved for him to return to Congo. I, along with all of my deaf children and adults in Congo, thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do for him and ultimately for them. I will do my best to send updates of the situation in Congo, will try to send some photos when a friend of my returns to Washington next month, and we will keep you in our daily prayers. Mary Kay Koerner-Teacher of the Deaf Kinshasa, Democratic Rep of Congo |
